Drawing and Talking

What is Drawing and Talking?

Drawing and Talking is a person-centred therapy focusing on prevention, early intervention and recovery, and provides an effective way for both children and adults to process emotional pain or trauma that they may be experiencing. Providing a highly effective person-centred therapeutic playwork approach, this tier 1-2 intervention is intended to complement rather than replace the work of CAMHS, art or other specialist therapists; enabling those who would otherwise go untreated to get the help they need before problems become entrenched.

As trained Independent Drawing and Talking practitioners, we offer this 12-week programme which allows individuals to access one-to-one support for 30 minutes, once a week, over 12 sessions. Suitable for age 5 through to adult.

What does it involve?

Each week, the individual draws with a trained practitioner with whom they feel comfortable. The practitioner will ask a number of non-intrusive questions about the drawing, and over time a symbolic resolution is found to old conflicts, trauma is healed and a secure attachment is made.

What are the benefits?

After completion of Drawing and Talking Therapy, individuals are better able to self-regulate their emotions and behaviour, form more meaningful connections with others and importantly, have higher self-esteem. Young people are better able to access an academic curriculum; enabling them to thrive in the world around them.

What people say about the Drawing and Talking

“It has been a way of expressing my emotions by drawing and if you find it hard to talk, then you don't need to as you just talk about the picture.  When I talk to the teacher at school, they listen but try to make me do things like be friends and force us to be together.  With Drawing and Talking, I could just be me and whatever I did was okay and right.  My mum has seen a difference - I play with my brother more and talk more about how I feel.
